Residential

Master Bedroom

When sitting down to design this master suite I first set the mood of the room. I wanted a refined, contemporary look but with the colors of coastal style to offer the best of both worlds. I wanted to recreate the feel of waking up in a chić hotel in Miami Beach, but with all of the cozy feels of being at home. The idea was to create a serene and tranquil setting.

I started by creating a concept board. Then for the color palette; refreshing light blues, creams and cool shades of grey, with added hues of orange for the perfect pop of color. From there, I started working on an accent wall. I wanted to find a wall covering that didn’t have a traditional repeating pattern, I wanted something with movement. I was instantly drawn to the fluid lines and coloring in this mural wallpaper which reminded me of the ocean. Once the accent wall was selected, I sat down to design the molding for the ceiling. The ceiling is often referred to as the fifth wall. After all, when you wake up in the morning, it’s one of the first things you see. I wanted something fun and less traditional than standard coffered ceilings. We designed a fun hexagon shaped concept from scribbling around on scraps of paper!

Once walls and ceilings were decided on, I focused on what I would consider the anchor of the room, the bed. Then I carefully chose furniture pieces to compliment one another. Since the master bedroom has a sitting area I wanted to make selections that exhibited continuity between the two spaces. I added a sectional sofa with extra depth for lounging and a polished looking console. I repurposed an old mirror, repainting it for a fresh look! When choosing ceiling fixtures I didn’t want to sacrifice style for functionality. For many, ceiling fans are an absolute must for a good night’s sleep. I searched for something that didn’t compete with the woodwork, but also modern and sleek. These acrylic blades did the trick! I then started layering in other components such as task lighting, window treatments, art and accessories.

As I thought about art, I realized that I wanted something with soothing colors for the evening yet something exhilarating for the morning. I was inspired by the artist and photographer Gray Malin and loved learning about how he created each of his collections. When it came time for choosing a floor covering, ultra thick and fluffy bright white rugs were a must. It feels like you are walking into a luxurious retreat. No shoes please 🙂

One of the last parts of this project were the custom window treatments! I wanted something understated and this pattern was the perfect answer for the roman shades! From there, it was all about having fun with accessories like reframing old wedding photos for a new look!

Every detail was carefully selected and placed with purpose. I wanted this to be a space that felt like an escape and an area to recharge. A place that was both sexy and serene. I wanted to create a little sanctuary, and now more than ever, we all deserve that!
